KINGS, NOBLES, AND PEASANTS
KINGS
EDWARD THE CONFESSOR
Edward the Confessor was the king of England from 1042 to 1066. His deep religious practices led to his nickname "Edward the Confessor" when he was younger. Edward became king when his brother died in a accident. Edward ruled for 24 years.
A SHORT SUMMARY OF THE DUTIES OF A KING
A king was the most respected member of society. All others were servants of the king. The kings made most decisions in the kingdom. Most kings were male, but a few exceptions such as Elizabeth I are notable. Usually, the king inherited his throne by birthright.
NOBLES
Nobles were the vassals of the king. Nobles belonged to the second social class, they were below the king. Nobles pledged their loyalty to the king for exchange for a piece of land. They wore fancy clothes and were quite aristocratic.
PEASANTS
Peasants were usually poor. They farmed, providing food for the kingdom. Peasants usually rented land from a lord's estate, and worked for that manor. Peasants lived a very simple life.
